In 1894 a furniture maker named A.J. Forbes was commissioned to build a chair for the Swedenborgian Church of the New Jerusalem in San Francisco. Forbes patterned his design after the simple, rustic style prevalent in furnishings found in the numerous Spanish missions that populated the San Francisco area at the time. A year later, a New York furniture manufacturer and retailer named Joseph McHugh copied Forbes’ design and by 1898 was offering a full line of Mission furniture for sale.
Originally the Amish Mission furniture style was popular only until around 1916. Because the inferior mass-production methods employed at the time contributed to its ultimate demise. In recent years, the Mission furniture style has experienced a rebirth. In large part due to many consumers’ desire for a more simplistic furniture design. Today, Amish master craftsmen are capable of producing extraordinary Mission furniture that offers a highly desirable combination of elegance and durability.
Characteristics of the Mission Furniture Style
Mission furniture is distinguished by its straight-line, rustic style, reminiscent of the much simpler time when it was first created. Simple horizontal and vertical lines are typical characteristics of the style, along with flat panels that accentuate the wood grain. Cherry, oak, and occasionally maple are normally used in the construction of Mission-style furniture, providing the superior durability that is hallmark of these pieces. Variations of the basic Mission style include Riverview, Cambrai, Antique and Siesta.

Our McCoy chairs arrived yesterday-we are beyond delighted with the quality of the materials and craftsmanship. This furniture is solid-like the kind your grandparents would have in their home, very heavy, solid wood and rugged upholstery fabric. Prior to purchasing these pieces, we shopped in a number of stores and were disappointed in the amount of particle board, the inattention to detail, and the quality of the finishes-not to mention the lack of flexibility with regard to individual stain/fabric preferences. We’ll be back.
